Sucking the Blak Tit

When is Australia going to get off the Blak tit that has fed them and start providing for the mother?

This statement from Tammi Gissell is at the heart of this new exhibition curated by Coby Ann Edgar and Maddison Gibbs.

"Sucking the Blak Tit" is an exhibition that confronts the current political climate in Australia, questioning the nation's dependency on First Nations culture while advocating for a more equitable relationship with the land and its custodians.

It brings together visual artists, activists and performers from across Australia who have ties to Sydney. Artists and activists, Jason Wing, Maddison Gibbs, Blak Douglas along with mother and son duo Nicole and Yarra Monks, activate the alley way with posters about personal sovereignty in the era of the Voice to Parliament, they are opening a few cans of worms and throwing them to the masses for discussion.

Inside we want you to feel at home. What’s on the telly? Well, stories of everyday life and the political opinions of First Nations peoples from the Central Desert region, a region that is disproportionately affected by media coverage, social issues that stem from broken government systems and the choices we make on their behalf in the city.

Vincent Namatjira as well as a collection of artists from Tangentyere artists and Yarrenyty Arltere artists have animated their figurative paintings of the everyday. Well you heard it on the radio, come and see it on the televisions.

The toilet is usually a space for some peace and quiet so Rowan Salvage AKA Salllvage is setting the tone with his trippy tones of the bush. Bit of peace while you sit on the throne, love.

Joan Ross is the only person in the show who is not First Nations and will be filling a cabinet full of curious fluro objects she has collected over the years. We need allies who can see both sides of the fence and Joan is certainly one to sucker punch the lies of the Colonial era.

For this show we aren't showing off our credentials. You can ask uncle Google for our CV’s. This is a circle of friends with offerings, just humans who make art. Not defined by the prizes that have been won and the collections that they are held in.
