Knowing Me In The Quiet

Knowing Me In The Quiet presents work by Zaya Barroso, Rainer Ciar, Emily Greenwood, Tyza Hart and AJ Jensen, exploring moments of repair, decay, connection and solitude experienced within the home. Each artist highlights a different way we shape our sense of self in conversation with the objects and spaces we occupy. When indulging in the grotty apathetic depths of goblin-mode or thoughtfully arranging a collection of sentimental trinkets, we use everyday things to process our individual and collective experiences

This show takes inspiration from the idea of ‘reparative objectification’ explored by Gordon Hall in their text Reading Things. Gordon’s essay asks how objects might teach us about the ways we relate to our bodies. They propose that protecting and cultivating objects can be part of an everyday healing process for marginalised folks, whose bodies are often objectified, misread, or made invisible.

Informed by the deep flaws in colonial systems and notions of ‘home’, Knowing Me In The Quiet exemplifies a felt sense of precarity and melancholy in the present. The lived realities of classism, racism, transphobia and homophobia are ever present, seeping out from the walls. Together these artists unpack how individuals might challenge these rigid social constructs and build moments of relief within a world that often feels inhospitable.

Situated within The Bearded Tit, a gathering place for many outsiders, this exhibition also intends to pay homage to the bar and the safety it offers our communities.
