SHOW #31: BLACK DIVAZ

25 JANUARY – 3 MARCH 2018
FEATURING Joseph Mayers, Pashion Couture + Drag Territory

In this Month of Rainbows, The Bearded Tit is showing off a bit of leg.

In September 2017, the inaugural Miss First Nations Drag Pageant was held in Darwin, NT. Six queens from around Australia descended upon the town to compete for the crown over five steamy days. A documentary Black Divaz was filmed amongst the glitz, glamour and flurry of hair and hot glue guns. And this show celebrates the making of that film and the personal journeys that brought each contestant to the glittering stage. It’s time to meet your Miss First Nations: Shaniqua, Nova Gina, Isla Fukyah, Jojo Zaho, Josie Baker, Miss Ellaneous, Marzi Panne and Crystal Love.

In our STREETSPACE and LANEWAY, Joseph Mayers’ intimate portraits of the queens are flanked by the shimmering hand-sewn textiles of Pashion Couture, who produced costumes for Miss Ellaneous and Marzi Panne. Inside, our CURIOSITY CABINET holds sequinned, bedazzled treasures from Drag Territory that feature as headdresses in the film. The TAXIDERMY T.V. plays the slow motion song cycle of transformation for each of the six contestants, while THE SALON showcases more stunning stills from Mayers on the set of Black Divas.

Because there ain’t enough glitter in the world for these beauties.
